Characteristics

Origin: Germany
Other breed names: Doberman Pinscher
Body: Square built. Dry muscular neck. Powerful chest.
Weight: 32 - 45 kg
Height: 63 - 72 cm
Common symptoms: Cancer, Skeletal abnormalities, Dilative Cardiomyopathy (heart disease)

Colour

Hair is rough, short and dense. It is tight, smooth and evenly distributed over the body. The colours are black or dark brown with a rust-red sharp marked pure pattern. The tan markings are on the muzzle, like a spot on the cheeks, above the eyelids (eyebrows), on the throat, two spots on the chest, wrists, midsole and feet, on the inside of the thigh and legs and under the tail.

Approach to training

The Dobermann has a very wilful character and that demands a very consistent treatment from his boss. The Dobermann needs a skilled handler, as a Dobermann can become neurotic by incorrect upbringing and then become very anxious or even start biting. Always be clear and honest with the Dobermann and it is not wise to tease or incite the dog during training. Dobermanns are suitable for training, but don’t start too early and don’t put too much pressure on the dog in the beginning. Do not force anything! Only start with the ‘real work’ when the dog is a bit older.

Dog sports

The Dobermann is an active dog and suitable for multiple dog sports, search work or police work is also very suitable for this breed.

Dobermans are suitable for owners who:

  • Want a very good and faithful watchdog
  • Can offer this dog a lot of exercise
  • Already had several dogs before
