Gluten-free dog food

There is an increasing number of dog food that is gluten-free. What exactly is gluten? Gluten is the protein found in certain grains. Wheat (including spelt and Khorasan wheat), rye and barley all contain gluten. There are also grains that are gluten-free. These are rice, corn, millet, teff, sorghum, quinoa and buckwheat. Oats are also gluten-free but are often contaminated with gluten from other grains.

Gluten-free and grain-free, what’s the difference?

grain-free food means that are no grains in the diet at all. In addition to the well-known wheat, the above-mentioned grains should also not be in the diet. You often see that these foods contain potato, pumpkin or sweet potato instead of wheat. A gluten-free diet can therefore contain grains, but the gluten (proteins) have been removed here.

Why should you choose gluten-free dog food?

If your dog suffers from food hypersensitivity, you can opt for a diet without gluten. An allergy is always to proteins. These are usually animal proteins, but the proteins (i.e. gluten) in grains can also cause it. The most common grain your pet’s body can react to is wheat. Hypoallergenic foods fall within gluten-free diets.

Is gluten intolerance common?

To answer this question, it must first be made clear that there is a difference between an allergy and an intolerance. An allergy triggers a reaction of the immune system, which manifests itself, for example, in itching. Gluten intolerance means that gluten cannot be digested properly by the body. Problems that can arise are abdominal pain, bloating and diarrhoea. We only see this intolerance in the Irish Setter. However, it can also occur in other breeds. So if your dog often suffers from stomach and/or intestinal problems, a gluten-free diet such as Farm Food HE Gluten-free may provide some relief.

When a gluten hypersensitivity is suspected, the approach is almost the same as that of any other food hypersensitivity. You feed the gluten-free diet for 4-6 weeks. This time is necessary to allow the body to get used to the new diet and to start the recovery. Always consult your veterinarian first.

Here you will find our range of gluten-free dog food.
