    Hill's u/d - Prescription Diet - Non Struvite / Urinary Tract Health - Canine

This Hill's diet contains a reduced concentration of protein, calcium, and nucleic acids, which reduce the building blocks of urate, oxalate and cystine stones. It reduces the formation and accumulation of non-struvite crystals. Due to the reduced protein quality, this food is also great for dogs with advanced stage renal failure. The copper concentration is lowered so that this diet food can be given to animals with hepatic copper storage disease.

Also available in Hill's Prescription Diet u/d Urinary Care wet food.

    Bladder problems in dogs

The most common bladder stones are struvite stones. Struvite is made up of the minerals magnesium, ammonium and phosphate. Another frequently occurring bladder stone is calcium oxalate. The following factors can influence the formation of bladder stones:

    • Acidity (pH) of the urine:

Struvite occurs in urine with a high pH, also called "alkaline urine". Oxalate is created in urine with a low pH, or an "acidic urine". Factors which affect the acidity of the urine may contribute to the formation of bladder stones.

    • Mineral composition of the urine:

Crystals are formed by various minerals. The concentration of these minerals in the urine is directly influenced by the composition of the diet. Low magnesium levels in the diet help reduce recurring struvite stones.

    Not suitable for

This diet food is not suitable for: cats, puppies, pregnant or lactating dogs, dogs with struvite crystals or stones, dogs with low albumin or hyperlipidaemia, (increased risk of) pancreatitis, and dogs that have just had surgery.
