How does a flea shampoo work on your cat?

As for dogs, a flea shampoo can help your cat get rid of fleas faster. Cats are more sensitive to substances that kill fleas than dogs. Substances that you can safely use on dogs can be toxic for cats. For cats, there are therefore mainly shampoos with natural ingredients. Think of Dimethicon in the Gentle Shampoo Dimethicon or the natural formula with plant extracts in the Stop! Animal Bodyguard Flea Shampoo.

These shampoos create a natural, physical barrier against fleas. This effect often lasts for about 10-14 days. In addition, you rinse off any remaining live fleas from your cat by washing.

How to use a flea shampoo on cats?

If you want to wash your cat, go through the following steps:

  • First wet your cat’s coat thoroughly
  • Spread the shampoo well over the coat and massage in
  • The shampoo needs 5-10 minutes to work properly
  • Rinse the shampoo well from the fur
  • Dry your cat well and let the fur dry in the air
  • Comb your cat to get the coat back into shape and comb out dead fleas.

Combine flea shampoo with other flea products

If your cat has fleas, it’s also wise to treat the surrounding area properly and any other pets at the same time. Otherwise, it is very difficult to get rid of fleas. A shampoo can be very helpful to get rid of most adult fleas. After that, you can continue the treatment with one of our spot on flea treatments for cats.

Note: Never use just any flea product suitable for dogs for your cat! Active substances in products for dogs can be toxic for cats and have nasty consequences!
