As a rabbit lover, you naturally want your rabbits to stay healthy and happy. Yet it can happen that your rabbit gets a wound, doesn’t look quite fit, or that you want to check its body temperature. With the right medical supplies at home, you can quickly provide the first care.
First aid for rabbits
Accidents can happen easily, even with rabbits. Whether it’s a wound, a scratch, or a sudden change in behaviour: a small home pharmacy can help you with this. This way, you always have the possibility to support your rabbits quickly. For example:
- A thermometer, so you can always check whether your rabbit has a normal body temperature. For rabbits, this lies between 38 and 39.5 degrees, which is higher than in humans. If in doubt or in case of an abnormal temperature, always contact your vet immediately!
- Betadine solution: to gently clean the skin.
- Honey ointment: the ideal ointment to immediately treat small superficial wounds and support wound healing.
Useful tools
In addition to the basic products for first aid and wound care, there are some useful tools that can make a difference in the daily care of your rabbit.
- A (rabbit) scale is indispensable. The weight of a rabbit tells a lot about its health. By weighing regularly, you can detect changes early and act faster when your rabbit doesn’t feel well.
- A medical body suit for rabbits can also be very useful. After surgery or with wounds, this suit prevents your rabbit from licking or scratching the wound, allowing it to heal calmly.
- Finally a Snugglesafe can be an important addition. Rabbits are sensitive to hypothermia, and a too low body temperature is very dangerous. With a heat element, you always have a safe way to support your rabbits in risky situations.
When should you go to the vet?
Although you can manage many small issues yourself, it is important to always remain alert and consult your vet when in doubt. Complaints such as persistent diarrhoea, refusal to eat or drink, breathing problems, or deep wounds always require professional care. Rabbits are sensitive animals and can deteriorate quickly, so immediate action is crucial.
