Safe transport for your small pet
Whether it’s a guinea pig, hamster, rat or mouse, a sturdy and stable travel carrier is essential. Small pets are often sensitive animals that can easily be startled or stressed. That’s why it’s important that their carrier closes securely but also provides sufficient ventilation. For small animals such as mice or dwarf hamsters, pay close attention to the spacing of the bars or ventilation holes to make sure they can’t slip through. Guinea pigs and rats are social animals and may benefit from being transported together for short journeys, as long as there is enough space inside the carrier.
To give your pet extra comfort, you can place some bedding or a small towel on the bottom. Hamsters and gerbils often like to burrow into a soft layer, while guinea pigs prefer a flat surface with some hay for comfort and something to nibble on during the journey.
The right size
The travel carrier should be large enough for your pet to sit upright and turn around, but not too spacious. If the carrier is too big, they may slide around during transport. For smaller pets, it’s best to choose a compact carrier with a secure closure. Larger pets like guinea pigs need more space to sit comfortably. They are best transported in a carrier such as the Moderna Travel Basket Odyssey.
