Why are probiotics important for rodents?

The intestines of rodents contain a complex bacterial flora that aids digestion and protects against harmful pathogens. This gut flora is delicate and can easily become unbalanced due to:

  • Stress (for example, after moving or introducing a new cage mate)
  • Dietary changes
  • Antibiotic treatment
  • Illness or reduced immunity

An imbalance in gut flora can cause problems such as diarrhoea, bloating, loss of appetite or weight loss. Probiotics can help restore and maintain digestive health in these situations.

Immune-boosting supplements

In addition to probiotics, there are also supplements that help strengthen overall immunity, often through ingredients such as:

  • Vitamins (for example, vitamin C for guinea pigs)
  • Minerals and trace elements
  • Herbal extracts (such as echinacea or ginseng)
  • Prebiotics, which are fibres that support beneficial gut bacteria

These products can be used preventively during stressful periods or as part of recovery after illness.

When should you give probiotics or immune-support supplements?
