Probiotics and immune system support for rabbits

A strong immune system is essential for your rabbits’ health. Probiotics and supplements that support immunity can help maintain a balanced gut flora and give the immune system an extra boost. They can be particularly helpful during or after periods of stress, illness, or antibiotic use. In this category, you will find a variety of products that contribute to this.

The gut plays a crucial role in the overall health and immunity of rabbits. Their digestion is very sensitive and depends on a good balance of gut flora. This flora consists of billions of beneficial bacteria that help digest fibre-rich food such as hay, while also supporting the immune system. In most cases, this balance remains stable as long as your rabbits receive a well-balanced diet with plenty of hay, high-fibre pellets, and a small addition of vegetables and dried herbs.

When does gut flora get out of balance?

Even with a good diet, a rabbit’s gut flora can become disrupted due to:

  • Stress: for example, moving, a new companion, or a vet visit
  • Dietary changes: switching food too quickly or feeding inappropriate foods
  • Antibiotics: some types kill not only harmful but also beneficial bacteria
  • Illness or recovery after surgery: the body is weakened, making imbalance more likely
  • Insufficient fibre: too little hay or fibre-rich food can cause digestive problems

When this happens, symptoms such as diarrhoea, gas, or reduced appetite may occur. This weakens not only the gut but also the immune system. Probiotics can help in such situations by replenishing beneficial bacteria and restoring balance. A healthy gut flora directly supports stronger immunity.

Extra support for acute problems
There are also products that can support the gut during acute issues such as gas, including RodiCare Akut. However, use these with caution: always consult your vet first, as incorrect use may be harmful.

If symptoms persist or are severe, always contact your vet. Probiotics and supplements can provide support, but they never replace necessary treatment.
