Although rabbits are often seen as independent animals, they can be trained very well. You can litter train them, help them get used to certain situations, or even teach them tricks. Training also helps prevent boredom and builds trust between you and your rabbit.
Positive reinforcement is the most effective approach to rabbit training. Use small, healthy snacks as rewards for desirable behaviour. Products such as Supreme Science Selective Naturals Meadow Loops or Bunny Nature My Little Sweetheart are ideal: they’re easily digestible, tasty, and free from excessive sugars. Always reward at the right moment to help your rabbit make the correct associations.
There are various tools that can make training easier and more enjoyable. Clicker training is often effective for example, you can use the Trixie Soft Clicker, combining the clicking sound with a treat as a reward. You can also use the Trixie Target Stick both tools help you teach and encourage desirable behaviour step by step.
Training sessions should be short and positive. Rabbits learn best in small steps, with plenty of rest in between. Repetition is important, but never force anything. Keep a close eye on your rabbit’s stress levels and adjust the training as needed. Curious about more ways to prevent boredom? Read our blog: A happy rabbit?
