Character

A Munchkin loves to be active, lively and playful. They are also very social and quickly bond with their owners. Because of its social character, the Munchkin usually gets along with other cats, dogs and children. A Munchkin is a very suitable indoor cat (because of its short legs). It is more difficult for the munchkin to jump away in various (dangerous) situations that tend to happen outside. Because of its short legs, this cat breed can’t jump as high as other cat breeds. This curious cat loves company, but can also appreciate a moment alone now and then.

Physical Characteristics

Colour

The Munchkin comes in all possible colours and pattern combinations. This applies to both medium and short-haired Munchkins. The ears are similar to those of a domestic cat, with some Munchkins the ears fold slightly forward.

Body, legs and tail

The Munchkin has strong muscles combined with an average bone structure. The Munchkin is characterized by its very short legs with round compact feet. Short legs in mammals are caused by a hereditary defect called dwarfism. This is also known as achondroplasia. This means that the body has retained the same size, but the legs have been shortened. The Munchkin has a thick hairy tail. This tail is carried upwards when walking..

Head, ears and eyes

The head of the Munchkin is equal to the head of a normal house cat. The head has the shape of a triangle with a flat forehead. Males often have broader cheeks. The Munchkin generally has large (almond-shaped) eyes. The eye colour varies..

Coat

Munchkins have a short or medium-long coat. This coat feels silky and has an average undercoat. How many times you need to groom your munchkin depends on the coat.
