    Kidney disease

Kidney disease is relatively common in dogs. Although young animals can suffer with kidney issues, renal problems are more prevalent in older animals. The disease is usually chronic (long-term) and progressive (renal function becomes less effective as time goes on). Full recovery is usually not possible, but your veterinarian may be able to keep these problems under control. One of the key measures is to give the pet special diet food.

    Royal Canin Renal Dog

Correct diet is important when treating kidney disease, so veterinarians will often prescribe a special food for your dog such as Royal Canin Renal Dog. The diet is specially formulated to support renal function in chronic kidney disease. The food is also tasty, ensuring that even dogs with smaller appetites will enjoy it.

If your dog does not like these pellets, you can try Royal Canin Renal Special Dog or Royal Canin Renal Select Dog.

    Recommended for

    • Chronic kidney disease.
    • Prevention of recurrent kidney or bladder stones, which make urine less acidic (urate stones, cystine stones).
    • The prevention of recurrent oxalate stones in dogs with impaired renal function.

    Key Features

Chronic kidney disease affects proper kidney function. Diseased kidneys cannot excrete phosphorus efficiently. This food has reduced phosphorus levels, to help slow the deterioration by boosting kidney function. Royal Canin Renal Dog is enriched with flavanols, which have two important effects: they slow down cell ageing, and improve blood flow to the kidneys. Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA / DHA) have anti-inflammatory properties and help reduce the decline of kidney filtration. Insufficient activity of the kidneys allows for an increase of urea in the blood (because the kidneys cannot filter waste products from the blood). This increase of urea creates lesions in the gastrointestinal tract. The addition of zeolite, which leaves a protective layer on the intestinal mucus and absorbs the toxic components, helps to protect the gastrointestinal tract. In dogs with kidney problems you may notice decreased appetite and/or gum damage. For these dogs, it is very important that the food is palatable and easily digestible.

  • Going strong at 20+
By John Brear, Tuesday 23 April 2024

Gizmo is a yorkie. Rescued a few years ago, her age is 22 or thereabouts. Despite being blind and deaf she enjoys life greatly, especially when the weather is kind and she can be free to roam the lawn. She clearly enjoys the scents and textures. A renal diet was recomended. We tried several brands and Royal Canin is her favourite. It has definitely improved her general health and blood test results.
