The symptoms of LUTD

Symptoms can range from asymptomatic (i.e., without any visible symptoms) to life-threatening by blockage of the urinary tract. Common symptoms are:

  • Problems/difficulty urinating
  • Pain when urinating
  • Frequently urinating
  • Blood in urine

The main risk factors for LUTD are:

  • Stress
  • Obesity
  • Diet
  • Castration
  • Too little movement
  • Other conditions

Tips to reduce the chance of problems recurring

  • Visit your vet regularly
  • Make sure your pet has sufficient water to drink
  • Keep an eye on the peeing behaviour and the colour of your pet's urine
  • Give your dog enough opportunity to urinate regularly and make sure you have a clean litter tray or multiple litter trays
  • Make sure your pet has enough exercise and avoid obesity
