A dog coat for your furry friend

Written by Rianne |

We regularly receive the question whether a dog should wear a dog winter coat when it gets colder outside. Of course, there are several reasons why your dog should wear a coat. One reason is the use of a dog coat as a fashion accessory. A perhaps more important reason is the functionality a dog coat can provide. Always make sure to buy a dog coat that has high quality fabrics, such as those from Hurtta and Ruffwear. A dog coat can be used as protection against rain, wind and cold weather. Is a dog coat really necessary for weather conditions?

When should a dog wear a coat?

Most dogs are sufficiently protected by their own coat, but there are exceptions where using a dog coat makes sense. A coat can be useful in the following situations:

  • Some breeds have very short fur or little undercoat, so they get cold faster. Think of sighthounds, Dalmatians and the Jack Russell Terrier.
  • Older and/or ill dogs often have a poorer quality coat and are more susceptible to cold.
  • Dogs from warmer countries are not used to colder climates. Think of adopted dogs from Greece or Spain. Their coat hasn’t had time to adapt.
  • Puppies have a different coat than adult dogs, often less adapted to cold and wet weather.
  • Dogs with skin problems often have a poor-quality coat and get cold more quickly.
  • Long stays in the cold outdoors, for example during winter sports or gundog training, where the dog also swims and must remain still.

Does my dog need a coat when it rains?

A dog’s own coat is usually the best protection against rain. A dog raincoat is not necessary in most cases. Only when there are coat problems might a raincoat be needed. A coat can also protect against dirt and moisture.

Is a coat necessary for a large dog?

Size does not determine whether a coat is necessary. Health, coat type and the situation do. If you are going on a winter sports trip, a coat can be wise. If you stay outside for a long time in the cold and your dog has to stand or sit still, a coat can also be helpful, especially if the dog has been swimming.

Is a coat necessary for a small dog?

Size does not determine the need here either. Coats are more often used as a fashion accessory for smaller dogs. The functionality is the same as for larger breeds.

Visibility in the dark

A coat can increase visibility in the dark. Besides lights, reflectors on most coats contribute to visibility.

What types of dog coats are there?

Find different kinds of dog coats in our range: fleece, cotton, quilted polyester, nylon or combinations. Winter coats are usually wind and water repellent. Raincoats mainly keep out wetness. There are also dog jumpers, which are warm but not water repellent, and dog bathrobes, which are very absorbent and practical.

Avoid overheating

Not all dogs need a coat. Incorrect use can cause overheating. Shivering is not always due to cold and can also signal excitement or fear.
