A dog coat for your furry friend
Written by Rianne |
We regularly receive the question whether a dog should wear a dog winter coat when it gets colder outside. Of course, there are several reasons why your dog should wear a coat. One reason is the use of a dog coat as a fashion accessory. A perhaps more important reason is the functionality a dog coat can provide. Always make sure to buy a dog coat that has high quality fabrics, such as those from Hurtta and Ruffwear. A dog coat can be used as protection against rain, wind and cold weather. Is a dog coat really necessary for weather conditions?
When should a dog wear a coat?
Most dogs are sufficiently protected by their own coat, but there are exceptions where using a dog coat makes sense. A coat can be useful in the following situations:
- Some breeds have very short fur or little undercoat, so they get cold faster. Think of sighthounds, Dalmatians and the Jack Russell Terrier.
- Older and/or ill dogs often have a poorer quality coat and are more susceptible to cold.
- Dogs from warmer countries are not used to colder climates. Think of adopted dogs from Greece or Spain. Their coat hasn’t had time to adapt.
- Puppies have a different coat than adult dogs, often less adapted to cold and wet weather.
- Dogs with skin problems often have a poor-quality coat and get cold more quickly.
- Long stays in the cold outdoors, for example during winter sports or gundog training, where the dog also swims and must remain still.
