Seed mixes and pellets
A traditional choice for parakeets is a seed mix: a varied combination of grains and seeds. These mixes are rich in fibre and fatty acids, but can become unbalanced if your parakeet only picks out the tastiest seeds. A balanced mix, such as Witte Molen Foxtail Millet Sprays, is a good foundation.
Pellets are a complete alternative. Each pellet contains the same nutrients, preventing deficiencies. Harrison’s High Potency Fine is a good example and is often used for young or recovering birds.
Supplementary food and snacks
In addition to the main diet, you can occasionally treat your parakeet to healthy snacks. Think of fresh vegetables such as cucumber, or special treats like Back Zoo Nature Fruit Cups. Egg food, such as Cédé Egg Food Large Parakeet/Parrot, is also a valuable supplement, for example during moulting or breeding season.
Nutrition tailored to the seasons
The nutritional needs of parakeets change with the seasons.
- Winter: food with more fats and energy helps them stay warm
- Spring/summer: lighter mixes with enough vitamins and moisture
- Autumn: extra support with minerals and proteins to build resistance
Versele-Laga NutriBird B14 Maintenance Food is a suitable option for daily use across different seasons.
