What does a budgie like to eat?
Budgies love seeds and grains, but they can be picky. A mix with millet, oats and linseed fits well with their natural preferences. Make sure your budgie doesn’t just pick out the tastiest seeds. A balanced seed mix such as Witte Molen Foxtail Millet Sprays is both a tasty and nutritious choice.
Seeds or pellets?
Seeds are popular, but not always complete. Pellets are specially formulated to provide all essential nutrients in one bite. Harrison’s High Potency Fine is a good option for young or recovering budgies. Versele-Laga NutriBird B14 is also suitable as a daily maintenance food.
Vegetables, herbs and treats
A piece of cucumber, carrot or bell pepper is a great addition to the main diet. Parsley can also be given occasionally, but only in moderation. Healthy treats such as Back Zoo Nature Fruit Cups can be offered as a variation. Limit snacks to prevent overweight.
Egg food as extra support
During moulting, breeding or for young budgies, egg food can be a valuable supplement. It supports feather and muscle development. Birds Egg Food is a suitable choice and easy to combine with daily food.
How much and how often to feed?
Budgies prefer to eat several small meals throughout the day. Always provide fresh food daily and check that the feeder doesn’t just contain empty seed husks. Overfeeding can lead to behavioural problems or weight gain, so offer variety but in moderation.
