Is cat grass safe for your cat?

All types of grass, including cat grass, can sometimes get stuck in the throat or nasal cavity after being vomited up. If this happens, your cat may keep swallowing, coughing, sneezing or gagging. Is your cat showing this behaviour after vomiting up (cat) grass? Then contact your veterinarian and mention that your cat has eaten grass.

However, cats naturally have the urge to eat grass or other parts of plants.

Houseplants can be toxic, which is why it’s a good idea to offer your cat a safe alternative. Cats that go outdoors can eat grass outside. But not all types of grass are suitable for consumption. Some varieties may be irritating or have sharp, barbed edges. Outdoor grass may also be treated with pesticides or other chemicals. That’s why it’s also a good idea to buy cat grass for outdoor cats. These varieties contain vitamins and minerals and are more tender.

So pay close attention to your cat’s needs when it comes to cat grass. Don’t let your cat eat too much grass at once. You can cut a few blades daily and offer them to your cat.

Growing cat grass

Cat grass is easy to grow at home. You can buy seeds separately or in a set with a pot or tray and a growing medium. GimCat offers several types of cat grass, such as Gimcat Cat Grass in Quick Germ Bag, Gimcat Cat Grass, and GimCat Hydro-Grass. Catit Senses has a specially designed system to grow grass for more stability and easier cleaning.

Folic acid in cat grass

Every cat wants to eat grasses and herbs. This is because they have a natural need for folic acid. Folic acid is a B6 vitamin that helps produce haemoglobin in red blood cells and supports oxygen transport in the body. Grass contains folic acid. Cats cannot produce this themselves, so they must get it from their diet. These days, commercial cat foods contain enough folic acid, but cats still feel the instinctive urge to eat grass.

Cat grass helps your cat vomit

Cat grass helps your cat to vomit. Cats are carnivores, and their digestive system is not built to digest plant-based food. Grass helps your cat eliminate indigestible matter such as small bones and hairballs. Hairballs form when swallowed hairs clump together in the digestive tract. If the hairball hasn’t reached the intestines yet, it can be vomited up.

Cat grass provides fibre for your cat

Grass is also high in fibre. Fibre offers many digestive benefits. It supports healthy bowel movements and gut flora and contributes to a feeling of fullness.
