Homeopathy for dogs and cats

Written by N |

Homeopathy is an ancient form of medicine that, just like in humans, can also be used for dogs and cats alongside ‘conventional’ veterinary care. The mechanism of action of homeopathy has not yet been scientifically proven. As a result, homeopathic (veterinary) medicines are legally not allowed to carry an indication for use, and only a limited number of veterinarians make use of this alternative – or rather, complementary – treatment method. This is also due to the fact that homeopathic veterinary medicine is not part of the veterinary curriculum. This blog article explains what homeopathy actually is and what the possibilities are within veterinary medicine alongside conventional care.

Standard treatment for dogs and cats

Before beginning a ‘regular’ treatment for pets, it is necessary to establish a diagnosis. Based on this diagnosis, a treatment plan can be implemented and a prognosis for the animal can be estimated.

This conventional veterinary medicine is based on scientific research.

Homeopathy for pets

Homeopathy is an alternative form of medicine that aims to stimulate the natural immune system of animals. The focus is on the entire animal, not just the affected area. A homeopathic veterinary medicine is used as a natural stimulus to help restore balance within the body. This is based on the principle of hormesis or the similia principle — the principle of similarity. This means that a substance in low dilutions could suppress the vitality of tissues (thus causing illness), while the same substance in high dilutions could stimulate vitality (thus promoting healing).

Homeopathy is often based on practical experience with this form of treatment.

Even for a homeopathic treatment, it is useful to first establish a diagnosis using diagnostic methods such as urine and blood tests and diagnostic imaging. Additional testing methods may then be used, such as bioresonance testing, acupuncture, etc., but not as standalone diagnostic tools.

Frequently used homeopathic products in veterinary medicine include the Heel products, such as Traumeel.

Side effects of treatment

Both conventional and homeopathic treatments can cause side effects. The phrase “if it doesn’t help, it won’t hurt” does not always apply to homeopathy. Especially when the wrong remedy is chosen for the wrong animal, it can lead to symptoms. Conventional medication can also cause side effects, but not always. This is often because the active substances in veterinary drugs may have a broader effect than intended. These medications are thoroughly researched for efficacy, safety, and dosage. Wide safety margins are typically used between effective doses and overdose levels. Side effects are often extensively listed in the package leaflet, as this is legally required. Individual sensitivities must also be considered — every animal responds differently.

Integrative veterinary medicine for your dog or cat: Combining the best of all treatment methods

Veterinarians often work based on experience, and not always purely on scientific evidence. The goal of veterinary treatment should be to choose the most effective, safe, and sustainable option for the animal.

Every type of medicine has its limitations. That’s why it is beneficial that different medical approaches exist side by side — allowing for a tailored treatment for each animal that best supports their health and well-being.

Homeopathy is not always applicable. If an animal’s self-healing ability no longer functions, homeopathic treatment may no longer be useful. Sufficient symptoms must be present in a dog or cat to determine the appropriate homeopathic remedy.

In addition to homeopathy, there is also a wide range of phytotherapy and orthomolecular supplements for animals. Phytotherapy uses the healing properties of plants — for example, the Puur product line. Orthomolecular supplements are made from ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, or fatty acids to help replenish physical deficiencies — such as Phytonics Multivit. Just like classical homeopathy, phytotherapy and orthomolecular supplements can play an important role in the treatment of animals.
