When is World Animal Day?

World Animal Day is celebrated every year on 4 October and is internationally known as World Animal Day. On this day, the focus is on animals and their welfare. For many pet owners, World Animal Day is also the perfect moment to give their pet some extra attention. The choice of 4 October is linked to Francis of Assisi.

How did World Animal Day begin?

The history of World Animal Day dates back to 1925, when the German writer and animal welfare advocate Heinrich Zimmermann organised the first celebration in Berlin. In the years that followed, his initiative was also adopted outside Germany. In 1927, the Czech Ilse Winter proposed creating an international day for animals. During an international congress in Vienna in 1929, it was decided that 4 October would be designated as International World Animal Day.

The choice of 4 October is linked to Francis of Assisi (1181-1226), who is known as the patron saint of animals and nature. He emphasised the importance of respecting animals and felt a strong connection with all living things. Within the Catholic tradition, Francis of Assisi is commemorated on 4 October. That is why this date was chosen for World Animal Day.

What can you do on World Animal Day?

World Animal Day is a lovely opportunity to give your pet a little something extra. Think of an activity you do not do every day, spending a bit longer playing together or giving a small surprise. This way, you can add something special to your pet’s daily attention and care on 4 October. For example, take your dog on a long walk somewhere new and surprise them with a tasty treat or a new toy. Spoil your cat with a fun play session, something tasty, an interactive toy or a comfortable new place to sleep. You can also do something special for your rabbit with fresh hay, a tasty treat or a new toy to explore.

What you do will of course depend on what suits your pet. A new activity or some extra playtime can help make World Animal Day just that little bit different from an ordinary day.
