Appearance

Colour

They are allowed in all colours, except chocolate, lilac, colour-point, cinnamon and fawn.

Body, legs and tail

The American Wirehair is medium-sized to big with a broad chest. Their legs are of average length and have well-developed muscles. Their paws are average-sized and round. The tail is in proportion to their body, wide at the base with a rounded tip. They hold their tail in line with their spine.

Head, ears and eyes

The broad head of the American Wirehair is slightly rounded. Their cheekbones and snout are well-defined. Adult male cats have prominent cheeks. The snout and chin are well-developed and square. The nose is fairly short with a soft, hollow slope. The wide-set eyes are big and round. The colour of their eyes is preferably in harmony with the colour of the coat. The ears are set wide apart and of medium size with blunt tips.

Coat

The wired coat is short and dense with a coarse feel. The whiskers and ear furnishings are also wired. The wired coat doesn’t need a lot of care to stay healthy and, aside from during the moulting period,  a weekly brushing is sufficient.
