Chartreux

The calm Chartreux is independent and strong-willed. Although this cat has no problems with being alone and likes his rest, he’s also really attached to his human. This medium to big cat is fine in cold weather and his coat doesn’t need a lot of care.

Character

Chartreux cats like calmness: they are independent and are quite reserved. They have a strong personality. Although they are known as independent cats, they are also very loving and loyal to their human. The Chartreux has a powerful, strong and robust appearance. They do well in cold weather, thanks to their woolly coat. They are excellent hunters.

Appearance

Colour

The coat of the Chartreux exists in all blue hues, from light blue-grey to dark blue-grey. The colour should be uniform. The rhinarium is also blue-grey. The soles of their paws are pink-greyish.

Body, legs and tail

The Chartreux has a sturdy body, especially male cats. The breed has a big chest, strong, broad shoulders and a straight back. Their bones are strong and their muscles firm and heavy. Their strong, muscular legs are straight and short to medium long.  Their paws are small and round. Their tail is medium long, fat and tapers to a blunt tip.

Head, ears and eyes

The Chartreux has a broad head shaped like an upside down trapezoid. The skull is slightly rounded with a straight, flat space between the ears. The low cheeks are full and round, and especially well-developed in male cats. The broad nose is straight, but not pointy. The Chartreux has prominent whisker pads and a typical ‘smile’. Male cats have especially powerful jaws. The Chartreux has small to medium-sized ears that are placed high on the skull. The ears stand up straight with blunt tips. The eyes are big and round, with slightly upwards corners. The colour varies from a deep yellow to a deep copper; green tones aren’t allowed.

Coat

The Chartreux has a short, thick and dense coat that resembles that of an otter. The shiny coat has a thick, woolly undercoat.
