European Shorthair

The European Shorthair is often compared to the common domestic cat. They have a lot of similar personality traits and characteristics. It’s a breed that’s quick to adapt and does great as an indoor cat as long as there’s enough distraction. The coat of this medium to big cat doesn’t require a lot of care.

Character

The European Shorthair is an active, energetic and playful cat. This strong cat is more easy-going than an average common domestic cat: it’s a softer and calmer breed. European Shorthairs are affectionate and easy-going. This breed is quick to adapt to new situations. They are excellent hunters that love being outside. Their coat doesn’t require a lot of care, a weekly brushing during the moulting period should suffice.

All colours are allowed, with exception of chocolate, lilac and colourpoint.

Body, legs and tail

The European Shorthair has a long body that’s anything but stocky. The body is sturdy, muscular and strong with a well-developed and broad chest. The strong, sturdy legs are of medium length and taper slightly. Their round paws are strong. The European Shorthair has a medium-long tail that’s thick at the base and tapers to a point.

Head, ears and eyes

European Shorthairs have a fairly broad, slightly rounded head. The head is longer than it’s wide with well-developed cheeks, especially in male cats. The straight nose is medium long and the strong chin is round. The European Shorthair has average ears that are slightly rounded. Lynx tips are permissible. The ears stand up straight and are set wide apart. The wide-set eyes are big, round and slightly slanted. The eye colour should be clear and in harmony with the coat colour.

Coat

The shiny coat of the European Shorthair is short, dense and close to the body. There’s no undercoat.

Weight

Male cats can weigh up to 8 kg.
