When should you use eye drops for your dog?
Eye drops can be used for:
- red or irritated eyes
- excessive tearing
- dirt, dust or sand in the eye
- dry eyes
- support after an eye infection (in consultation with your vet)
- preventive eye care for sensitive dogs
Some dog breeds, especially those with protruding eyes or long hair around the eyes, are particularly prone to eye problems.
Types of eye drops
Within this category you will find different types of eye drops, such as:
- cleansing eye drops to remove debris
- hydrating eye drops for dry or irritated eyes
- caring eye drops to support the eye surface
These products are intended for mild eye complaints and daily care.
When should you contact a vet?
Eye problems can worsen quickly. Always contact a vet if:
- the eye is painful or held shut
- yellow-green discharge is visible
- the eye becomes cloudy
- symptoms persist for more than a few days
Medicated eye drops containing antibiotics or anti-inflammatory agents are only available through a vet.
Tips for safe use of eye drops
- Always wash your hands before use
- Do not touch the eye with the tip of the bottle. It helps to rest the hand you are using to apply the drops on your dog’s head, which provides stability and allows you to move with your dog.
- Use a clean applicator for each eye where possible
- Follow the product’s instructions for use
With the right eye drops, you can keep your dog’s eyes clean and comfortable. By recognising and treating symptoms in time, you can prevent mild irritation from developing into a more serious eye problem.
