How long should a dog wear a protective shirt after surgery?

Written by Antoinet |

Most dogs undergo surgery at some point in their lives. This may be a routine procedure or a specialised operation. In both cases, it is important that the wound is properly protected.

A protective shirt for dogs offers effective protection after surgery
Your dog has plenty of freedom of movement while wearing a protective shirt. By unfastening the press studs at the base of the tail and rolling up the shirt, your dog can easily relieve itself during walks. For female dogs, this is often unnecessary, as they can relieve themselves through the opening around the tail. The shirts can be washed at 60/90º Celsius, ensuring your dog always has a clean shirt.

The benefits of a protective shirt

  • Stress-free protection for wounds and skin conditions
  • Prevents scratching, biting, and licking
  • Optimal freedom of movement
  • Easy to put on and take off
  • Comfortable closure with press studs

Various types of protective shirts available

How long should a protective shirt be worn?

It is important that the dog does not lick the wound, as this can lead to an infection. The general recommendation is to keep the protective shirt on for 7–10 days. Your own veterinarian may advise differently if needed. The wound is usually fully closed and healed after 10 days. In some cases, it may be wise to keep the shirt on for a few more days after the stitches are removed, as this can sometimes cause itching.

What should you watch out for when using a protective shirt?

Make sure your dog does not excessively lick the surgery site, even while wearing a protective shirt. Despite the shirt, the wound can still become moist and irritated. Excessive licking or biting at the protective shirt near the surgical wound is often a sign of irritation. It is recommended to check the surgical wound daily. If there are any signs of irritation or pain, it’s best to contact your veterinarian.

What types of protective shirts are available?

Different types of protective shirts are available for different types of surgery. For example, there are front leg sleeves that can be used after removing a lump. These come in versions that cover both front legs or just one. For protection of the hind legs, there are also rear leg sleeves.
