Water supply for reptiles

Reptiles need constant access to clean water and an appropriate humidity level to drink properly, shed their skin and regulate their body temperature. When water is lacking or becomes contaminated, this can quickly lead to stress and health issues such as skin and shell problems or digestive complaints. A good water supply therefore closely matches the species’ natural habitat. Rainforest species benefit from mist and water droplets, while aquatic turtles need both swimming water and a dry area to rest.

Drinking water and water quality

Clean and safe drinking water is the foundation of all reptile care. Tap water can contain substances that are less suitable for reptiles, and stagnant water can quickly become polluted by waste and biofilm. With a liquid such as Tetra ReptoSafe, you can make tap water suitable for use immediately. By also keeping the water moving with, for example, the Exo Terra Repti Flo 200 Circulation Pump, it stays clean for longer and oxygen is distributed more evenly, which improves water quality.

Humidity, misting and water zones

Many reptile species do not drink from a water bowl, but absorb moisture from droplets on leaves or from their surroundings. A stable humidity level and regular misting are therefore essential. With an automatic system such as the Exo Terra Monsoon Nano Misting System, the terrarium is evenly misted without you having to think about it constantly. Aquatic turtles need not only sufficient swimming space, but also a dry and stable area to rest and warm up. A floating platform such as the Exo Terra Turtle Bank provides solid support and makes it easy to get in and out of the water.
