Benefits of wet food for dogs and cats

Written by Mara |

Wet food is a real treat for many dogs and cats. Thanks to its soft texture, intense smell and flavour, it is often eaten with great enthusiasm. But wet food offers more benefits than just a tasty meal. It can be a valuable addition to the daily diet and fits well into a varied feeding routine.

Extra moisture intake

One of the biggest benefits of wet food is its high moisture content. While dry food contains around 8 to 10% moisture, wet food consists of around 70 to 80% water. This means your dog or cat takes in extra moisture without noticing while eating. Cats in particular naturally have a low need to drink. Their ancestors obtained a large part of their moisture from their prey, which is why many domestic cats drink relatively little. Wet food can help increase total moisture intake. Wet food can also be a nice addition for dogs that drink little, or on warm days.

More flavour and aroma from wet food

Wet food has a stronger aroma than dry food. It is precisely this aroma that often makes it extra appealing to dogs and cats. Because pets’ sense of smell plays an important role in their appetite, wet food can help make meals more appetising. This can be helpful, for example, for fussy eaters or animals that temporarily have less appetite. Older dogs and cats, whose sense of smell can sometimes decrease slightly, may also become more interested in their food again as a result.

Wet food: ideal for fussy eaters

Some dogs and cats eat everything you serve them without any problems, while other animals are much more selective. By offering wet food occasionally or mixing a small amount through dry food, the meal often becomes more appealing. As a result, fussy animals sometimes start eating with more enjoyment again.

Please note that you should always introduce new food gradually to reduce the risk of stomach and intestinal problems.

Variety on the menu

Just like people, many pets enjoy variety. Wet food offers an easy way to vary flavour, texture and eating experience. Many different flavours and recipes are available, making it easy to add variety without completely changing the diet.

Variety can also contribute to greater enjoyment at mealtimes and makes feeding that little bit more fun.

Using wet food in different ways

Wet food does not always have to be given as a complete meal. You can also use it in other ways. Think, for example, of a small reward, a filling for a food toy or lick mat, or as a topping over kibble. This turns the meal into a fun challenge straight away.

Combining wet food with dry food

You do not have to choose between wet food and dry food. Many owners choose to combine both. This way of feeding is also called mixed feeding. This allows you to benefit from the advantages of both types of food: the crunchy texture of kibble and the extra flavour and moisture intake of wet food.

Frequently asked questions about wet food

Is wet food healthier than dry food?

Not necessarily. Both good-quality wet food and dry food can provide a complete and balanced diet. Wet food does offer extra moisture and is often more appealing in terms of aroma and flavour.

Can my dog or cat eat wet food every day?

Yes, provided it is a complete food suitable for your pet. You can give wet food daily or combine it with dry food.

Is wet food suitable for fussy eaters?

Yes. Due to its strong aroma and soft texture, many fussy dogs and cats find wet food more appealing than dry food.

Can I combine wet food and dry food?

Yes, you certainly can. This way of feeding is called mixed feeding and combines the benefits of both types of food. Please note that the total amount of food should be adjusted to prevent excess weight gain.

Is wet food bad for my dog or cat's teeth?

No, wet food is not bad for the teeth in itself. However, unlike kibble or special dental food, wet food provides hardly any abrasive effect on the tooth surface. As a result, it helps less with reducing plaque. Whether your dog or cat eats wet food or dry food, good dental care is important. Regular toothbrushing is the most effective way to keep the teeth healthy. In addition, special dental snacks, chew products or a dental food recommended by the vet can be a valuable addition.
