What is brewer’s yeast?

Brewer’s yeast is an inactive yeast derived from the species Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Despite what the name may suggest, brewer’s yeast does not contain alcohol and does not cause fermentation in the body. It is naturally rich in B vitamins, amino acids, proteins and various minerals.

What is brewer's yeast good for in dogs?

Brewer’s yeast is mainly used to support healthy skin and coat and your dog’s overall vitality. The B vitamins it contains play a role in normal metabolism and the maintenance of healthy skin, among other things.

Brewer’s yeast is a nutritional supplement, not a medicine. It can complement a complete and balanced diet, but does not replace it.

Brewer’s yeast for healthy skin and coat

One of the best-known uses of brewer’s yeast is to support the skin and coat. B vitamins contribute to the maintenance of healthy skin. The amino acids and proteins it contains also provide building blocks for the body and coat.

Has your dog been suffering from persistent itching, hair loss, red skin or other skin problems? Have the cause investigated first.

Brewer’s yeast during moulting

During moulting, your dog loses its old hair and grows a new coat. Brewer’s yeast can be given as a nutritional supplement during this period to support the skin and coat from within. Regular brushing helps to remove loose hair in the meantime.

Brewer’s yeast for the immune system

Brewer’s yeast naturally contains beta-glucans, among other substances. These substances can support the immune system. As a supplement to good nutrition and care, brewer’s yeast can therefore contribute to your dog’s overall condition.

Brewer’s yeast for active dogs

Brewer’s yeast provides proteins, amino acids and B vitamins, among other nutrients. This means it can also complement the diet of active dogs. Bear in mind, however, that a healthy dog receiving complete dog food will normally already obtain all essential nutrients from its daily diet.

Does brewer’s yeast help against fleas?

It is often claimed that brewer’s yeast makes dogs less attractive to fleas. However, there is insufficient scientific evidence that brewer’s yeast reliably protects dogs against fleas.

Therefore, do not use brewer’s yeast as a replacement for a proven flea treatment. If you want to protect your dog against fleas, choose a suitable antiparasitic treatment.

How do you give brewer’s yeast to your dog?

Brewer’s yeast for dogs is available in several forms, including powder, flakes and tablets. You can easily mix powder and flakes into the food. You can give tablets directly if your dog takes them easily.

Always follow the recommended amount for the product in question. The composition and concentration may differ between supplements.

Is brewer’s yeast safe for dogs?

When used according to the dosage instructions, brewer’s yeast is generally suitable for healthy dogs. Do not simply give large quantities. Even a natural supplement can cause undesirable effects if too much is consumed, such as gastrointestinal problems.

Does your dog have a medical condition or food hypersensitivity, or is it receiving medication? If in doubt, consult your vet before adding a supplement.
