How does a kidney diet help your cat?
A kidney diet reduces the strain on the kidneys. It contains less protein, resulting in fewer uremic waste products that burden the kidneys. The proteins included are of high quality and easy to digest, ensuring your cat still gets what it needs to function normally. A kidney diet is also low in phosphorus. Since phosphorus must be excreted by the kidneys, impaired kidney function can lead to elevated levels in the blood. Kidney diets often contain more fat to improve palatability and increase calorie intake, so your cat needs to eat less to maintain its weight. These diets also tend to have a higher content of fatty acids, especially omega-3, which help protect remaining healthy kidney tissue and support heart and vascular health, as well as blood pressure.
What do kidney supplements do for cats with kidney problems?
In addition to food, various supplements can help support kidney function. These can be used alongside a kidney diet or for cats who, for whatever reason, cannot eat one. Supplements may:
