Most cats prefer an open litter box as it allows them to keep an eye on their surroundings and gives them a sense of security which makes cats more relaxed. With many models, the lid can be removed, allowing you to test both variants with your cat. Perhaps your cat prefers to go to the toilet more sheltered. In that case, you can place the top back on the litter box.
