Cycling with your dog

Written by Rianne |

Cycling with your dog is a great way to stay active together. Your dog can run alongside the bike or ride in a basket or trailer. At a steady trot, your dog builds muscle without putting too much strain on the joints. However, not all dogs are suited to run next to a bike. In that case, a basket or trailer is a safer alternative.

Getting your dog ready for cycling

Cycling with your dog requires preparation. Your dog should be obedient and familiar with the bike before you begin.

Step-by-step training

 • Start by walking with the bike at your side. Walk between your dog and the bike.
 • Then switch sides, so your dog is on the opposite side of the bike.
 • Ride slowly for a short distance. If that goes well, you can gradually increase the speed.
 • Your dog should trot calmly beside you, without pulling or stopping.
 • The lead should always be loose.

You should not start trotting next to the bike before 6 months of age, and only build up gradually after 12 months. Most dogs are not fully developed until around 18 months.

Is your dog suited for running alongside a bike?

Not all dog breeds are equally suitable:

 • Brachycephalic breeds like Bulldogs, Shih Tzus or Boston Terriers may struggle to breathe and tire quickly.
 • Very small breeds like Chihuahuas or Maltesers have to run faster to keep up with a normal pace.
 • Dogs with long backs and short legs like Dachshunds are more prone to back problems.

Puppies and young dogs have developing joints and should not be overexerted. Dogs with health issues (joints, back, heart) are also not suitable for running beside a bike. When in doubt, consult your veterinarian.

Safe cycling with your dog

Holding the lead by hand can be risky. A dedicated bike leash attachment is a safer option, as it absorbs shocks and keeps your dog at a safe distance from the bike.

Always use a well-fitting harness rather than a collar, so that pressure is evenly distributed in case of sudden tension.

Safety tips:

 • Do not cycle when the temperature exceeds 20°C
 • Let your dog relieve itself before setting off
 • Check the paw pads after your ride
 • Do not cycle right before or after feeding

Transporting your dog by basket or trailer

Bike baskets are great for small dogs. Use a harness and consider a basket with a mesh cover, such as the Trixie Basket for Luggage Carrier or the Trixie Basket with Mesh Cover.

Trailers are ideal for longer distances or older dogs. Let your dog get used to the trailer at home before you ride. Example: Trixie Bike Trailer (available in our shop).
