Cycling with your dog
Written by Rianne |

Cycling with your dog is a great way to stay active together. Your dog can run alongside the bike or ride in a basket or trailer. At a steady trot, your dog builds muscle without putting too much strain on the joints. However, not all dogs are suited to run next to a bike. In that case, a basket or trailer is a safer alternative.

Getting your dog ready for cycling
Cycling with your dog requires preparation. Your dog should be obedient and familiar with the bike before you begin.
Step-by-step training
- Start by walking with the bike at your side. Walk between your dog and the bike.
- Then switch sides, so your dog is on the opposite side of the bike.
- Ride slowly for a short distance. If that goes well, you can gradually increase the speed.
- Your dog should trot calmly beside you, without pulling or stopping.
- The lead should always be loose.
You should not start trotting next to the bike before 6 months of age, and only build up gradually after 12 months. Most dogs are not fully developed until around 18 months.
