Dog eats dandelions: is that dangerous?

Written by Mara | Dierenarts |

Many dogs occasionally eat grass, leaves or flowers during a walk. But what if your dog suddenly eats dandelions? Should you be worried, or is a dandelion actually harmless? The good news is that dandelions are usually not poisonous to dogs. In fact, the plant is even regularly used in herbal preparations. Still, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

Are dandelions poisonous to dogs?

No, dandelions are generally not poisonous to dogs. Neither the flower, the leaves nor the roots contain substances that are normally dangerous. A dog that eats a few dandelions will usually not have any problems because of it.

Why does a dog eat dandelions?

Dogs may eat plants for various reasons:

  • out of curiosity
  • out of boredom
  • because of the taste or smell
  • to support the stomach or intestines

Some dogs like to eat grass or plants when they have mild stomach complaints. Also read our blog Dog eats grass.

Health benefits of dandelions

Dandelions contain various nutrients, such as:

  • antioxidants
  • bitter compounds
  • vitamins and minerals

In herbal medicine, dandelions are sometimes used to support digestion, the liver and the urinary tract. That is why you may also come across dandelion extract in supplements for animals.

When should you be careful?

Although dandelions themselves are usually safe, there are situations in which caution is important.

1. Sprayed plants

Be careful with dandelions along roads, fields, parks and gardens. These may have been treated with pesticides, weed killers, exhaust fumes or fertilisers. These substances can be harmful to dogs.

2. Large quantities

Does a dog eat a great deal of dandelions? Mild stomach and intestinal complaints may then arise, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. This is usually caused by irritation of the stomach or intestines.

3. Confusion with other plants

Some plants look like dandelions but are less safe. So make sure that you know exactly which plant your dog is eating. Also read our blog Which plants are toxic to your dog?.

Symptoms to look out for

Contact a veterinarian if your dog develops complaints after eating plants, such as:

  • frequent vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • lethargy
  • shivering
  • shortness of breath
  • excessive drooling

Especially if you suspect that the plant had been sprayed.

What should you do if your dog has eaten dandelions?

In most cases, you do not need to do anything if your dog has eaten a few dandelions. Do keep an eye on your dog for a while. Make sure there is enough drinking water and watch for stomach and intestinal complaints. Has your dog eaten a large quantity or do you suspect contact with pesticides? Then contact your veterinarian.

Why do dogs actually eat plants?

Eating plants is not unusual in dogs. Some dogs do it from time to time without anything being wrong. Still, excessive eating of grass or plants can sometimes point to boredom, stress, stomach or intestinal problems, or a lack of fibre or nutrients. Do you notice this behaviour starting suddenly or returning very often? Then it is wise to have your dog’s diet and health assessed properly.
