Giardia test dog

With a Giardia test, you can easily find out whether your dog is infected with Giardia. This is a common intestinal parasite that mainly causes variable diarrhoea. Giardia occurs regularly in both puppies and adult dogs and can lead to long-term gastrointestinal problems if the infection is not recognised.

When is a Giardia test recommended?

A Giardia test is recommended if your dog:

  • has long-lasting or recurring diarrhoea
  • shows variable stools, sometimes slimy or foul-smelling
  • suffers from flatulence or abdominal pain
  • is gaining weight poorly or losing weight
  • has been in contact with other dogs, for example at a kennel or dog training school

Giardia is also frequently found in puppies with diarrhoea.

Why test instead of treating as standard?

Giardia requires a targeted approach. Not every case of diarrhoea is caused by Giardia, and unnecessary treatment is not desirable. With a Giardia test, you can be sure whether this parasite is the cause, allowing you to treat it in a targeted way and help prevent reinfection.

If the test result is positive, it is advisable to contact your vet.
