Clownfish

The clownfish (three-band anemonefish) is a striking marine fish best known for its cheerful orange colour with white stripes. This fish naturally lives in warm, tropical seas and is kept in an aquarium in salt water. Clownfish are active and curious fish that often choose a fixed spot in the aquarium. They are known as relatively hardy marine fish, but they do need a stable and well-maintained saltwater aquarium. An anemone is not required in the aquarium. This marine animal with soft tentacles can, however, help the clownfish show more natural behaviour.

Aquarium and habitat

The clownfish is a saltwater fish and therefore needs a well-equipped marine aquarium. Stable water quality is very important, as saltwater fish can be sensitive to fluctuations. Make sure there is enough swimming space, hiding places and a good filter system. Clownfish often choose a fixed spot in the aquarium where they spend a lot of time. This may be an anemone, but also a coral, rock or another quiet spot. An anemone is therefore not necessary to keep clownfish successfully.

Nutrition

Clownfish are omnivores. They eat both animal-based and plant-based food. In the aquarium, you can feed them suitable fish food, such as flakes or granules. Always check whether the food is suitable for marine fish and saltwater aquariums. Variety in the food helps keep the fish healthy and active. It is better to give several small portions a day than one large amount. This helps prevent food being left behind and the water becoming polluted more quickly.

Keeping with other fish

Clownfish can usually live well with calm marine fish. They are often social, but they can defend their fixed spot, especially when they form a pair. Preferably keep clownfish alone, as a pair or in a suitable community aquarium with calm tank mates. It is less suitable to keep several species of clownfish together in a small aquarium, as this can lead to conflict. Always choose fish that suit the same water values and the same type of marine aquarium.

Care

Caring for a clownfish mainly requires a stable saltwater aquarium with good water values. Check the water quality regularly and carry out maintenance on time, such as changing part of the water and keeping the filter clean. Clownfish are hardy marine fish, but they too can become ill due to stress, poor water quality or incorrect nutrition. Therefore, pay close attention to changes in behaviour, colour or appetite. A well-maintained aquarium with calm tank mates helps the clownfish stay healthy and active.
