Aquarium and habitat

The Neon Tetra naturally occurs in calm, fresh water with plenty of vegetation. In the aquarium, they feel most comfortable in a well-planted environment with enough hiding places. It is important to keep these fish in a group, because they are true schooling fish. Soft and slightly acidic water matches their natural habitat best. Also make sure the water quality remains stable and avoid large or busy fish in the same aquarium.

Nutrition

Neon Tetras are omnivores and accept different types of food. They can be fed dry food, supplemented with frozen or live food such as water fleas, tubifex and mosquito larvae. It is important to defrost the food first when using frozen food. Offer small portions that are eaten within one to two minutes and remove any leftover food to prevent polluting the water.

Keeping with other fish

Thanks to their calm and non-aggressive nature, Neon Tetras can live well with other social aquarium fish. They are highly suitable for a community aquarium. It is important not to combine them with large fish, because they may then be seen as prey. In a group with their own kind, they feel safest and show their natural behaviour best.

Care

Regular checks of the water quality are important for Neon Tetras. Pay attention to the acidity, hardness and the presence of substances such as ammonium, nitrite and nitrate. It is advisable to replace part of the water regularly, for example once every two weeks. Keep the aquarium clean by removing plant remains and leftover food and by maintaining the filter properly. It is also important to check every day whether the fish are healthy and active.
