Veiltail

The veiltail is an elegant variety of the goldfish, recognisable by its rounded body shape and long, divided tail fin. This freshwater fish swims more calmly than the common goldfish and therefore needs a spacious, well-filtered aquarium without a strong current. Veiltails are social fish that enjoy living with others of their own kind. Because of their distinctive build and delicate fins, they require more care than is often thought.

Aquarium and living environment

Veiltails need a spacious aquarium, as they can grow larger than many people expect. A fish bowl is not suitable: it quickly becomes too small, provides little oxygen exchange and makes it difficult to install a good filter. The water temperature should preferably be between 18 and 22 degrees, with as few fluctuations as possible. A good filter is important, but the current should not be too strong because veiltails swim slowly. Plants and hiding places create a pleasant environment, while sharp decorations should be avoided to prevent damage to fins or eyes.

Nutrition

Veiltails are omnivores and eat both animal and plant-based food. Sinking pellets are often more suitable than floating food, because veiltails can take in too much air when feeding at the water surface. Their main food can be supplemented with, for example, frozen or live food from a reliable supplier and with plant-based food such as aquatic plants or blanched vegetables. Feed small amounts so that no leftovers remain and the water quality stays good.

Keeping them with other fish

Veiltails are calm, social fish that are best kept with others of their own kind. They are less suitable for living with fast, busy or aggressive fish, as this can cause stress. Fish that nibble at fins are not a good combination either. Because of their long fins and slower swimming style, veiltails need calm tank mates and plenty of space.

Care

Caring for a veiltail mainly requires attention to space, water quality and nutrition. Check regularly whether the fish are swimming actively, eating well and have no damage to their fins or eyes. Test the aquarium water regularly for pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, among other things. Changing the water regularly helps to reduce waste substances and keep the aquarium healthy. It is best to rinse filter material in old aquarium water so that beneficial bacteria are preserved.
