All about the goldfish

Written by Astrid | Paraveterinair |

Goldfish are perhaps the most well-known aquarium and pond fish. Many people think they are easy to care for, but did you know that goldfish actually have quite specific needs? In this blog, we guide you through everything you need to know about goldfish.

Whether you are just starting out or have been keeping goldfish for a while, there is often more to learn than you might think. How old can they actually get, how often and how much should you feed them, and which fish can you (or should you not) keep together with goldfish? In addition, there are surprisingly many different types of goldfish. From slim, fast varieties to round fancy goldfish with flowing fins – each type has its own appearance and sometimes slightly different needs.

How old do goldfish live?

Goldfish can live surprisingly long lives. On average, they live around 10 to 20 years, but with proper care, lifespans of 25 years or more are not uncommon. Their lifespan strongly depends on their environment, diet and water quality. In an aquarium that is too small or with poor care, goldfish often remain smaller and do not live as long.

What types of goldfish are there?

Goldfish come in a surprisingly wide variety of shapes and types. The most well-known is the slim, classic goldfish, which is often kept in ponds and can grow quite large. There are also elegant fancy varieties such as the fantail, which has a rounder body and long, fan-shaped fins. Other popular types include the telescope goldfish (with distinctive protruding eyes) and the ranchu, which has no dorsal fin and a compact body. These unique forms look beautiful, but are often slightly more delicate and swim more slowly than the slimmer types.

When keeping different goldfish together, make sure that faster and slower varieties do not get in each other’s way, for example during feeding. By choosing compatible types, you can prevent stress and create a calmer environment.

How big do goldfish grow?

Many people think goldfish stay small, but this is a misconception. Goldfish grow throughout their lives and, depending on the space available, can become quite large. In a spacious aquarium or pond, they can easily reach 20 to 30 cm. Are your goldfish staying small? This is often a sign that they do not have enough space. This is not a healthy situation and can affect their wellbeing and lifespan.

How often and what should you feed a goldfish?

Goldfish are omnivores and enjoy a varied diet. You can feed them special goldfish flakes or granules, supplemented with, for example, frozen or live food. Small amounts of vegetables, such as cooked peas or spinach, can also be a good addition. Preferably feed your goldfish 1 to 2 times a day with small portions that are eaten within a few minutes. Overfeeding is common and can lead to polluted water and health problems. It is better to feed slightly too little than too much.

Which fish can live with goldfish?

Goldfish can be kept together with other goldfish or calm cold-water species. It is less suitable to combine them with tropical fish, as these require different temperatures. Small fish are also not a good match, as goldfish may see them as food. Therefore, choose fish of similar size and with a calm temperament to avoid stress and unwanted behaviour in the aquarium. Also discover other fish species.

Aquarium and environment

Goldfish are cold-water fish and can be kept in both aquariums and ponds. In an aquarium, sufficient space is essential, as goldfish grow significantly and swim actively. Always choose a spacious aquarium with a good filtration system. Goldfish produce relatively large amounts of waste, making stable water quality especially important. A setup with sturdy plants and enough open swimming space creates a pleasant environment.

Goldfish care

Goldfish require regular maintenance, especially because they quickly pollute the water. It is important to change part of the water weekly and maintain the filter properly. Also pay attention to stable water parameters, as fluctuations can cause stress and health problems. On the page ‘Supplements for aquarium fish‘ you will find, among other things, test kits to check the water quality yourself.

In addition, goldfish need enough space to move freely. A small, round fishbowl is therefore not suitable. Always choose a spacious aquarium or pond where the fish can display natural behaviour. Keep in mind that some fancy goldfish varieties, such as fantails, can be slightly more sensitive and may require a bit more attention than the slimmer types.

Common mistakes with goldfish

When keeping goldfish, the same mistakes are often made. These include:

 • Keeping goldfish in a small bowl or too small aquarium
 • Overfeeding, causing the water to become polluted quickly
 • Insufficient filtration or maintenance
 • Not changing the water often enough
 • Combining goldfish with tropical or very small fish

By taking these points into account, you can create a stable and healthy environment.

Goldfish are beautiful and active fish that you can enjoy for many years, provided they receive proper care. By ensuring sufficient space, good water quality and appropriate nutrition, you lay the foundation for a healthy and lively aquarium or pond.
