Terrarium heating

Terrarium heating is essential for reptiles because they cannot regulate their body temperature themselves. In the wild, they warm up in the sun and cool down in the shade. In a terrarium, you need to recreate those conditions with a clear warm spot and a cooler zone, so your reptile can choose what feels comfortable. The right temperature supports important processes such as digestion, immunity and activity. If it is too cold or too changeable, your reptile may eat less, become sluggish and develop issues more quickly.

Which types of heating suit your terrarium?

Which heat source is best depends on the species and the setup of your terrarium. If you mainly want to provide a steady base temperature, underfloor heating is a logical choice, such as the Exo Terra Self-Regulating Heat Mat. If your reptile needs a warm zone that feels more like sunlight, you are better off choosing radiant heat, for example with the Arcadia Deep Heat Projector. For terrariums where you want a heat source without light, a ceramic option can be suitable, such as the Exo Terra Ceramic Heat Emitter or the Arcadia Ceramic Infrared Heat Lamp. By using heating in your terrarium, you can create targeted warm zones and fine-tune the habitat to your reptile.
