Kidney diet for cats
A kidney diet has several characteristics that can help support cats with kidney problems. These diets have the lowest possible protein level, contain good-quality and highly digestible proteins, and have a limited phosphorus content.
These characteristics help reduce the burden on the kidneys. Kidney diets are also often tasty and higher in calories, so cats with a decreased appetite are more likely to keep eating and maintain their optimal weight. Added omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants also help protect the remaining healthy kidney tissue.
Most kidney diets are available as dry food and wet food.
Kidney diets and urinary crystals
Some cats with urinary crystals may need a renal diet, depending on the type of crystal your vet has identified. Calcium oxalate crystals require a different diet from struvite crystals, and these are usually renal diets that are low in calcium and phosphorus.
If your cat has urinary crystals, a urine test is essential before choosing a suitable diet. For more information, read our advice article: which food is best for cats with urinary crystals?
