Just like humans, dogs can get sunburned and suffer from skin damage if they are exposed to too much sun. And that’s why it’s important to protect your dog’s sensitive areas with sunscreen when there is a lot of sunshine, especially if they have thin or light-colored fur. These areas primarily include areas with little fur, such as the nose, ears and belly. In the case of sunburn, which can be recognized by warm, red and scaly skin, the animal should be removed from the sun immediately. You can then cool the skin with moist compresses and, if necessary, apply a soothing skin ointment. However, to prevent this from happening in the first place, it is advisable to use sunscreen. And sunbathing is healthy for dogs too, but just like for us humans, only in moderation. But with so many options available, how do you choose the best sunscreen for your dog?

What to Look for in a Dog Sunscreen

When shopping for dog sunscreen, there are a few key things to consider:

  • Ingredients: Make sure the sunscreen is specifically formulated for dogs and does not contain any ingredients that could be harmful to them. Avoid sunscreens with zinc oxide or para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), as these can be toxic to dogs.
  • SPF: Choose a sunscreen with a high SPF (sun protection factor) to provide maximum protection. A minimum of 30 SPF is recommended.
  • Water-resistant: Look for a sunscreen that is water-resistant, as this will help it stay on your dog’s skin longer and provide better protection.
  • Easy to apply: Choose a sunscreen that is easy to apply, as you’ll want to be sure to cover all exposed areas of your dog’s skin. A spray or lotion sunscreen may be easier to apply than a cream or stick.

When to Use Dog Sunscreen

It’s a good idea to use dog sunscreen any time your dog will be outside for extended periods of time, especially during peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Dogs with thin or light-colored fur, as well as those with pink or light skin, are especially prone to sunburn and should be protected. Sunscreen can also be helpful for dogs with certain medical conditions, such as skin cancer or autoimmune disorders, that make them more sensitive to the sun.

How to Apply Dog Sunscreen

Applying sunscreen to your dog is similar to applying it to yourself. Start by reading the instructions on the sunscreen packaging and follow the recommended application guidelines. Here are some general tips:

  • Apply the sunscreen to all exposed areas of your dog’s skin, including their ears, nose, and belly.
  • Avoid getting sunscreen in your dog’s eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Rub the sunscreen in well to ensure full coverage.
  • Reapply the sunscreen every two hours or after your dog has been in the water.

By following these guidelines and choosing a high-quality sunscreen, you can help protect your dog’s skin from the damaging effects of the sun.
