Hideouts

Rodents are prey animals by nature and feel safest when they have a place to hide. Always provide several hiding spots, such as a wooden house, a basket or a hammock. Choose based on your pet’s species, for example guinea pigs are unlikely to use a hammock, while rats or ferrets will absolutely love it. By offering multiple hideouts, they can retreat whenever they want to rest or feel insecure. This also helps to reduce stress.

Feeding, drinking and hygiene

A good food and water bowl is essential in every enclosure. Choose sturdy, stable dishes that can’t easily be tipped over. The height of the bowls should match your pet’s size, for example a low bowl for a hamster and a slightly higher one for a guinea pig. To keep the cage clean, you can place a litter tray. Many rodents are surprisingly tidy and tend to use one specific spot for their toilet. This keeps the enclosure cleaner and fresher for longer.

Exercise and enrichment

Rodents are curious explorers. A well-furnished cage should therefore provide plenty of enrichment, with places to climb, run, chew and explore. Think of shelves, tunnels and natural materials for play and gnawing. This keeps your pet physically active and mentally stimulated. For guinea pigs, there are indoor runs available to expand their space. Smaller rodents, however, are too agile and could easily climb over or through them.

Comfort and decoration

A little luxury is always welcome. With a soft hammock, sleeping bag or snuggle sack, you can easily add extra comfort. Fun accessories such as wooden ladders or willow bridge also create a natural and cosy atmosphere in the cage.

Finally, complete the setup with suitable bedding designed for rodents.
