Aquarium and habitat

The harlequin rasbora naturally occurs in small rivers, lakes and rice fields where a lot of organic material such as leaves is present. This creates an environment with soft and acidic water. In the aquarium, a layout with plenty of plants is important, combined with enough swimming space. This species prefers subdued lighting and a gentle current. A dark substrate and floating plants help the colours stand out better.

Nutrition

The harlequin rasbora is an omnivore and needs both plant based and animal based food. Suitable food consists of flake food and granules for omnivores, supplemented with live or frozen food such as artemia, mosquito larvae, tubifex and mysis. Because these are relatively small fish, it is important to match the food to the size of the mouth.

Keeping with other fish

The harlequin rasbora is a schooling species and should be kept in groups of at least 6 fish, preferably more. This is important for welfare and ensures that natural behaviour is more visible. Because of its social character, the harlequin rasbora is suitable for keeping with other fish, provided they do not show unusual behaviour that causes stress.

Care

For good care, it is important to maintain stable water values. Although the species can adapt to a higher pH, a lower pH is necessary for breeding. In addition, it is important to keep the fish in a group and to furnish the aquarium well with plants and hiding places. Regular maintenance and suitable food contribute to a healthy living environment.

Breeding & difference between male and female

The difference between male and female can be seen in adult harlequin rasboras in body shape and markings. Females are fuller bodied, while males are slimmer. In addition, the lower edge of the wedge shaped patch is more pointed and extends further forwards in males, while in females it is straighter.

When breeding, the harlequin rasbora sticks its eggs to the underside of leaves, such as those of plants like Crypto’s and Aponogeton. During spawning, the male swims upside down beside the female and fertilises the eggs. Several eggs are laid at a time, often totalling around 80 to 100 eggs. Soft and acidic water is needed for successful breeding. The eggs hatch after about 18 hours, after which the larvae continue to develop before they start swimming freely.
