How much does a dog sleep?

Written by Mara | Dierenarts |

Sleep is extremely important for your dog’s health and wellbeing. Just like humans, a dog’s sleep needs vary depending on life stage and situation. On average, a dog sleeps around 12 to 14 hours per day, but this can vary significantly.

Sleep per life stage

How much a dog sleeps depends greatly on its age.

How much does a puppy sleep?

Puppies sleep the most. They often need 18 to 20 hours of sleep per day. This is because they are developing rapidly. During sleep, they process new impressions and grow both physically and mentally. It is therefore completely normal for a puppy to sleep a lot, with short active periods in between.

How much does an adult dog sleep?

Adult dogs sleep on average 12 to 14 hours per day. This is spread over the night and several naps during the day. How active your dog is plays a major role. A dog that exercises a lot or is mentally stimulated will often sleep deeper and longer.

How much does an older dog sleep?

Senior dogs usually need more rest again. They often sleep 16 to 18 hours per day. This is because their body has less energy and recovery takes longer. Older dogs tend to move less and rest more.

When is sleeping a lot a problem?

If your dog sleeps a lot, this is usually completely normal. However, it is important to stay alert to changes.

If your dog suddenly sleeps much more than usual, responds less or appears lethargic, something may be wrong. Think of pain, illness or hormonal issues. Changes in appetite, drinking or behaviour can also be a signal.

In that case, it is advisable to contact your veterinarian.

Factors influencing sleep patterns

Your dog’s sleep is not only determined by age, but also by environmental factors.

In warm weather, dogs often sleep more. They cannot regulate their body temperature as efficiently and conserve energy by resting more. In addition, activity, excitement, stress or new experiences can cause your dog to need more sleep. Think of a busy day, a move or a new environment. Your dog processes all these stimuli mainly during sleep.

A good sleeping place for your dog

A comfortable sleeping place helps your dog to fully relax. This is important for both physical and mental health.

Choose a place where your dog feels safe, preferably in a quiet area of your home. Some dogs like to retreat into a crate. A crate can be a safe, personal space where your dog can sleep undisturbed. You can find various options in the category dog crates.

Make the sleeping area comfortable with a soft and supportive cushion, such as from the category crate cushions or dog beds and cushions. This is especially important for older dogs, who are more sensitive to joint problems. An orthopaedic dog bed can be a good solution.

For travel or holidays, a travel crate can be a practical option. This way, your dog also has a familiar place to rest when away from home.

Finally, make sure the sleeping area is not drafty and not too warm, especially in summer.

How much a dog sleeps varies by age and situation. As long as your dog behaves normally otherwise, sleeping a lot is usually not a problem. Do you notice clear changes in sleep patterns or behaviour? Then it is wise to have this checked by your veterinarian.

A good balance between activity and rest, along with a comfortable sleeping place, ensures your dog remains healthy and content.
