How old does a canary get?

Written by Mara | Dierenarts |

A canary is a popular songbird, often chosen for its cheerful nature and beautiful singing. But a common question many owners have is: how old does a canary actually get? The answer largely depends on care, nutrition and living conditions.

The average lifespan of a canary

On average, a canary lives between 8 and 12 years. With optimal care, a canary can even reach 12 to 15 years, although this is less common. In the wild, life expectancy is usually lower due to factors such as predators, diseases and food scarcity.

What determines the lifespan of a canary?

The lifespan of a canary is largely determined by the quality of care. Good nutrition plays a key role. A varied diet with high-quality seeds, possibly supplemented with egg food, vegetables and a little fruit supports overall health. In addition, fresh drinking water and grit or stomach grit are important for proper digestion.

The living environment also has a major impact. A spacious, clean cage in a draught-free location with sufficient daylight helps prevent stress and illness. Canaries are sensitive birds, so peace and routine contribute to a longer lifespan. Hygiene is essential, as birds are prone to respiratory issues and infections.

Exercise is also important. Canaries that have space to fly stay fitter and are less likely to develop health problems. Mental stimulation, such as variety in perches or environment, also helps reduce stress.

Finally, it is important to stay alert to health issues. Canaries often hide signs of illness until a later stage. Signs such as sitting fluffed up, singing less, reduced appetite or abnormal droppings are reasons to consult an avian vet promptly.

A canary can therefore reach a respectable age, provided it receives the right care. With proper nutrition, a safe living environment and attention to health, you can enjoy a cheerful and singing companion for many years.
