Probiotics for dogs: when should you give them and what do they help with?

Written by Mara |

Your dog’s intestines contain billions of bacteria that together form the gut flora. These bacteria play an important role in digestion, the absorption of nutrients and the immune system. When the gut flora becomes unbalanced, this can lead to problems such as diarrhoea, sensitive digestion or variable stools. Probiotics can help support the gut flora and restore its balance. But when should you give probiotics to your dog and how long can you use them for?

What are probiotics?

Probiotics are live, beneficial bacteria that support the gut flora. They help maintain the balance between good and unwanted bacteria in the gut. As a result, they can contribute to healthy digestion and good immunity.

Probiotics are often combined with prebiotics. These are dietary fibres that serve as food for the good gut bacteria, helping them to develop better.

When should you give probiotics to a dog?

Probiotics can offer support in various situations, for example:

  • for acute diarrhoea
  • for parasites, such as giardia
  • during or after a course of antibiotics
  • for sensitive digestion
  • during stressful situations, such as moving house, a kennel stay or travel
  • for chronic intestinal problems, such as IBD, as a supplement to treatment
  • to support immunity

With diarrhoea, it is also important to identify the cause. Read more about this in our blog about diarrhoea in dogs. Does your dog have a chronic intestinal condition, such as IBD? You can read more about this in our blog IBD in dogs.

What do probiotics do?

Probiotics can support gut health in various ways. They help restore the balance of the gut flora, support the intestinal wall and can give unwanted bacteria less opportunity to multiply. In addition, healthy gut flora plays an important role in the immune system, because a large proportion of immune cells are located in the intestines.

Although probiotics can support many dogs, they are not medicines. In the case of severe or persistent symptoms, it is important to consult a vet.

Which probiotics should you choose?

There are various probiotics available for dogs. Some products contain one bacterial strain, while others combine several strains. When choosing, it is important to use a product that has been specially developed for dogs. These contain bacterial strains that are suitable for a dog’s intestinal system.

When will you notice an effect?

With acute diarrhoea, improvement may occur within a few days. With chronic intestinal problems or immune support, it often takes several weeks before the maximum effect is visible.

It is important to follow the recommended dosage and give the product for the advised period.

Are probiotics safe?

Probiotics are generally safe for healthy dogs. At first, the stools may sometimes change slightly for a short time as the gut flora adapts. This usually disappears on its own.

Does your dog have severe symptoms, persistent diarrhoea, blood in the stools or is your dog very unwell? Always contact your vet.

Frequently asked questions about probiotics for dogs

How long can a dog use probiotics for?

That depends on the purpose. With acute diarrhoea, probiotics are often given for a few days to a few weeks. For chronic intestinal problems, sensitive digestion or immune support, some probiotics can also be used long term or even permanently. Always follow the advice on the packaging or that of your vet.

Do vets recommend probiotics for dogs?

Yes, many vets recommend probiotics as additional support, for example for diarrhoea, during or after a course of antibiotics or for dogs with a sensitive gut. Probiotics do not replace medical treatment, but they can contribute to healthy gut flora and the recovery of digestion.

Are probiotics always live?

Yes. Probiotics are, by definition, live microorganisms, usually bacteria or yeasts, that have a positive effect on health when given in sufficient quantities. However, not all supplements for gut health contain probiotics. Some products contain prebiotics, which serve as a food source for the good gut bacteria, or postbiotics, substances produced by bacteria that support the gut flora.

Why do some probiotics need to be kept chilled and others not?

That depends on the bacterial strains used and the way the product has been developed. Some probiotics contain bacterial strains that remain stable at room temperature, while others are more sensitive to heat. These products must be kept chilled to ensure that enough live bacteria remain present throughout the entire shelf life. Therefore, always store probiotics according to the manufacturer’s storage advice.
