What is black cumin oil?

Black cumin oil is pressed from the seeds of Nigella sativa. Despite its name, this plant is not the same as the cumin you know as a culinary spice. The oil contains various unsaturated fatty acids and plant compounds, including thymoquinone.

For dogs, it is best to choose a product that is suitable for animals and follow the recommended dosage for that product.

What is black cumin oil good for in dogs?

Black cumin oil is mainly used as a nutritional supplement to support your dog’s skin, coat and overall vitality. The fatty acids it contains can contribute to the maintenance of healthy skin and coat.

Black cumin oil is not a medicine. It can complement a complete and balanced diet, but cannot replace it.

What does black cumin oil do for dogs?

Black cumin oil provides your dog with various fatty acids and plant compounds. Thymoquinone in particular receives considerable attention because of its antioxidant properties. Other possible effects of this compound are also being studied. However, scientific evidence specifically involving dogs is still limited for many of these uses.

Black cumin oil for skin and coat

Fatty acids play an important role in maintaining a healthy skin barrier. Black cumin oil can therefore be given as a dietary supplement when you want to provide additional support for your dog’s skin and coat.

Has your dog been suffering from persistent itching, redness, bald patches or other skin problems? Do not use black cumin oil as a replacement for an examination by a vet. Skin problems can be caused by allergies, parasites or a skin infection, for example.

Using black cumin oil topically on your dog

Black cumin oil can also be applied topically to the skin and coat, depending on the product. A small amount of oil can be applied to dry or flaky skin, for example, and gently massaged in. The fatty acids in the oil help keep the skin supple while also caring for the coat.

When using the oil for the first time, preferably test it on a small area of healthy skin first. Stop using it if you notice redness, itching or other irritation. Do not apply the oil to open wounds, around the eyes or to mucous membranes. Also bear in mind that your dog may lick the oil from its coat.

Black cumin oil and the immune system

Black cumin oil contains various bioactive compounds and antioxidants. For this reason, the oil is also used to support general condition and natural immunity. Bear in mind that research into the precise effects and optimal dosage in dogs is still limited.

Does black cumin oil help against ticks in dogs?

You may regularly read that black cumin oil repels ticks. Some dog owners have had positive experiences with this, both when using it internally and topically. However, there is insufficient scientific evidence that black cumin oil reliably protects dogs against ticks.

Therefore, do not use black cumin oil as a replacement for a proven tick treatment. Good protection is especially important when travelling with your dog to an area where ticks can transmit serious diseases.

Is black cumin oil toxic to dogs?

The dosage is important. A black cumin oil product that is suitable for dogs can be used according to the stated dosage instructions. However, this does not mean that large quantities are automatically safe.

It is also important to distinguish between cold-pressed black cumin oil and highly concentrated black cumin essential oil. Essential oils are much more concentrated and cannot simply be given to your dog at the same dosage or applied undiluted to the skin.

Does your dog have a medical condition, take medication or is she pregnant? Consult your vet before using black cumin oil.

How do you give black cumin oil to your dog?

Depending on the product, black cumin oil can be used internally and/or topically. For internal use, you can mix the recommended amount into your dog’s daily food. You can start with a small amount so that your dog can gradually become accustomed to the taste and smell.

For topical use, you can apply a small amount of oil to the skin or coat and gently massage it in, for example to care for dry or flaky skin. Avoid the eyes, mucous membranes and open wounds.

Please note: not every black cumin oil is suitable for internal use. Some products are intended exclusively for application to the skin and coat. Therefore, always check the instructions for the product in question and follow the recommended application and dosage. In addition, do not use concentrated black cumin essential oil as though it were ordinary cold-pressed black cumin oil.
