Ear Cleaner for Dogs

If dogs suffer from excessive earwax, ear cleaners can be used to remove the build-up.

When a dog has an ear infection, an ear cleaner can also be used to prepare the ears for the ear drops or ointment intended to treat the infection. The ear cleaner should always be administered a few minutes before the ear drops or ointment. Read the package leaflet carefully or ask your veterinarian for advice.

Here you will find our range of ear cleaners for dogs.

Why should you use an ear cleaner for your dog?

With an ear cleaner, you can clean your dog’s (or cat’s) ears. It can be used routinely for dogs or cats with recurring ear problems, such as excessive earwax. Some dogs naturally produce more earwax than others. Earwax provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and yeasts that can cause an ear infection.

When your pet has an ear infection, it is often advisable to clean the ears first with an ear cleaner or another preparatory ear drop. Ear ointment will not work properly through earwax or dirt. The cleaner the ear canal, the better the ear ointment can do its job.

Please note that not every ear cleaner can be used in case of an infection. If it is suitable, it should always be administered before each treatment with ear drops or ointment. Discuss this with your veterinarian and read the package leaflet carefully.

How do I administer an ear cleaner to my dog?

The ear cleaner should be applied directly into the ear. Insert the bottle vertically into the ear canal. A dog’s ear canal is quite deep and does not run in a straight line, so take care when inserting the cleaner. Apply a sufficient amount of liquid into the ear canal. Massaging is not necessary and is even discouraged. Read the package leaflet carefully before treatment and for the correct dosage.

Tip: Apply the ear cleaner outdoors or in an area where splashes are not a problem. Your dog will shake its head vigorously, which may cause the liquid to splatter.

What is the best ear cleaner for my dog or cat?

There are different types of ear cleaners available. Which ear cleaner is best for your dog depends on your pet’s needs and situation. Below, we explain a number of different types of ear cleaners. You can choose from bottles, ampoules and wipes.

A safe product that can be used for dogs or cats with a ruptured eardrum is Otoact Ear Cleaner. The benefits of this ear cleaner are:

  • Contains no ototoxic ingredients;
  • Effectively removes earwax thanks to the ingredient squalene;
  • Has a soothing and keratolytic effect;
  • Supports the growth of healthy skin cells.

There are also many other ear cleaners available. One example is the ampoules from Monoclean. The benefits of this ear cleaner are:

  • The transparent ampoule makes cleaning the ears easy;
  • The small ampoules are hygienic because you use a new ampoule for every treatment, helping to prevent recontamination of the ears.

In addition to liquids, there are also ear cleaning wipes. The benefits of these wipes are:

  • Fit around your finger;
  • Contain natural Aloe Vera, which is gentle on sensitive skin;
  • Gentle cleaning suitable for puppies.

These wipes are particularly suitable for cleaning the outer ear.

Warnings

When treating your dog’s ears with an ear cleaner or other ear drops, it is important to keep the following in mind:

  • Do not use cotton buds in your dog’s ears;
  • Do not use ear products on animals with possible eardrum damage unless the product specifically states that it is safe to do so. If in doubt, consult your veterinarian, who can examine your dog or cat’s ear using specialised equipment.
  • Every ear cleaner differs in its effect and method of use. Always read the package leaflet carefully.
