Corydoras

The Corydoras, also known as the armoured catfish, is a popular aquarium fish that mainly lives at the bottom of the aquarium. This tropical freshwater fish is known for its active behaviour and is constantly searching for food among the sand or gravel. Corydoras are social fish that enjoy living with others of their own species. Thanks to their calm nature, they can live peacefully with other tropical fish species.

Aquarium and living environment

Corydoras feel most at home in a well-designed tropical aquarium with a soft sandy substrate. They constantly search the bottom for food using their barbels. A fine, soft substrate helps prevent damage to the barbels. The aquarium should also provide plenty of hiding places.

Nutrition

Corydoras are omnivores and mainly eat food that sinks to the bottom. Special sinking bottom-feeder food, such as sinking tablets or pellets, provides a good staple diet. You can also vary their diet with frozen or live food, such as mosquito larvae or tubifex. Although Corydoras eat leftover food from the bottom, they should not rely on this alone. Always make sure they receive enough of their own food.

Keeping with other fish

Thanks to their peaceful temperament, Corydoras can be kept successfully with other tropical aquarium fish. However, avoid large or aggressive fish species that may chase or harass them. Corydoras feel most comfortable in groups, so it is important to keep several together.

Care

Corydoras are relatively easy to care for, provided the water quality remains good. Regular maintenance, such as changing part of the water and keeping the filter clean, is therefore important. Also make sure the substrate is free from sharp stones to prevent damage to the barbels.
