What do pigeons eat?

Written by Kelsey |

You’ll see pigeons almost everywhere, in cities, towns and sometimes even in your garden. Sometimes they land just to rest, but they may also be weakened or looking for food. Many people like to give pigeons a little extra, especially during the colder months when less food is available. But what do pigeons actually eat? In this article, you’ll learn how to feed pigeons and what to keep in mind.

What can pigeons eat?

Pigeons mainly eat seeds and, in nature, they consume grains, seeds and some greens. If you want to feed a pigeon, these are suitable choices:

Seeds & grains

A seed mix aligns well with a pigeon’s natural diet. Products such as Bird’s Egg Bird Feed are suitable because they contain a variety of seeds and grains. In addition, Harrison’s High Potency Fine is also a good option. This food is rich in essential nutrients.

Food for weakened pigeons

Noticed a pigeon that seems weakened? A more nutritious option can provide good support. Harrison’s Recovery Formula supports recovery and provides extra energy to regain strength.

What should pigeons not eat?

Not all foods are suitable for wild pigeons and some can even be harmful. It’s best to avoid the following:

Bread

Many people tend to offer bread, but it provides little nutrition for pigeons and can lead to malnutrition. Wet bread can clump together, making it difficult to digest.

Seasoned foods & salt

Processed foods such as crisps, crackers and salty snacks are harmful to pigeons. These foods contain too much salt and seasoning.

Milk & dairy

Pigeons cannot digest lactose and may develop stomach and intestinal problems.

Raw beans & rice

Never give a pigeon raw beans or rice. These can swell in the stomach and cause constipation.

Sugary products

Avoid biscuits, cake and other sweets. These foods are high in sugar and are therefore harmful to pigeons.

How should you feed a pigeon?

If you want to feed a pigeon, offer small portions. This helps pigeons maintain their natural behaviour. It also prevents leftover food and avoids attracting other animals. Choose a quiet spot where pigeons can eat safely, preferably slightly elevated, and keep the feeding area clean.
