Urinary Crystals Diet for Dogs

Urinary crystals are common in dogs. Several types of crystals can form in a dog’s bladder, namely struvite, calcium oxalate, cystine and urate.

Struvite is the only type of urinary crystal that can be dissolved through dietary management.

The other types of crystals cannot be dissolved through nutrition. However, food can play a role in preventing urinary crystals.

Here you’ll find our complete range of food products that can help dissolve and prevent struvite crystals. Many of these diets can also be used to prevent calcium oxalate. Make sure to check carefully before ordering whether the food is suitable for struvite only, or for both calcium oxalate and struvite.

Urinary Crystals Diet for Your Dog

The type of urinary crystal determines which food is suitable for your dog. Struvite is the type of crystal that can most effectively be treated and prevented with a special diet.

A struvite-dissolving diet has the following characteristics:

  • It has a diluting effect on the urine. This is often indicated by the RSS (Relative Supersaturation). A low RSS means the urine is undersaturated.

  • It lowers the acidity and often has a buffering effect, ensuring the urine pH does not drop below 6.

  • It contains a limited amount of crystal-forming minerals.

Struvite occurs more frequently in small dogs. It is also known that struvite is more common in cases of bacterial bladder infections. So if your dog suffers from struvite, have the urine tested for bacteria as well. Often, antibiotics are required in addition to diet to treat the infection.

Please also bear in mind that urinary crystals can develop into bladder stones. These stones can be formed from various types of crystals, making treatment more difficult. In many cases, surgery is required.
