How old does a parakeet live?

Written by Mara | Dierenarts |

Parakeets are cheerful, social birds known for their chirping and lively character. Many people bring a parakeet into their home without knowing exactly how long these birds can live. It is useful to understand this in advance, as with proper care, parakeets can live surprisingly long lives.

Average lifespan of a parakeet

The most commonly kept parakeet is the budgerigar. On average, they live between 5 and 10 years. With good care, a healthy diet and a safe environment, some parakeets can even reach 10 to 15 years of age.

There are also larger parakeet species, such as cockatiels or ring-necked parakeets. These often live longer. Cockatiels typically live 10 to 15 years and sometimes even longer.

What determines a parakeet’s lifespan?

A parakeet’s lifespan depends largely on its living conditions. In the wild, parakeets often live shorter lives due to predators, disease and food shortages. In the home, these risks are reduced, but they rely completely on the care of their owner.

Nutrition plays a major role. Seed alone is not enough; a parakeet also needs fresh vegetables, some fruit and additional nutrients. A varied diet supports the immune system and helps prevent health issues.

Exercise is also important. Parakeets are active birds that enjoy flying. A spacious cage and regular free flight help keep them fit and prevent boredom. Toys can also help with this.

Social interaction also has an impact. Parakeets are true companion animals. A parakeet that receives enough attention or lives with another bird is often happier and remains mentally healthier.

Health and care

Good hygiene and a clean living environment contribute to a longer lifespan. This includes regularly cleaning the cage, providing fresh drinking water and avoiding draughts.

It is also important to watch for signs of illness. Parakeets often hide symptoms until late. Reduced activity, sitting puffed up, eating less or changes in droppings can be warning signs. In such cases, it is advisable to consult a veterinarian with experience in birds.

How can you help your parakeet live as long as possible?

A parakeet can reach a good age, but this requires proper care. By providing good nutrition, enough exercise, social interaction and a clean environment, you increase the chance of a long and healthy life.

On average, a parakeet lives 5 to 10 years, but with optimal care this can increase to 10 to 15 years. This means it is not a short-term pet, but one you can enjoy for many years.
