Kidney problems are common in dogs. The cause of the kidney problem cannot always be determined. For example, dogs may have chronic kidney failure, but kidney function can also be reduced as a result of Weil’s disease, leishmaniasis or, for example, grape/raisin poisoning.
There are many different kidney diets for dogs on the market. These diets share properties designed to reduce the burden on the kidneys, namely:
These properties support the remaining healthy kidney tissue and aim to prevent further kidney damage, as well as the symptoms a dog can experience as a result of reduced kidney function.
High-quality, highly digestible proteins should help prevent the dog’s muscles from breaking down and minimise the production of uraemic waste products.
A kidney diet can also be used to help prevent the formation of bladder crystals. This concerns bladder crystals in the form of calcium oxalate (reduced calcium and phosphorus levels and a neutral urine pH) and cystine and urate (reduced protein content and a neutral urine pH).
